Week One Movie List

My dear, sweet mother is a little insane when it comes to Christmas decorating. Every year she drags me out for December 26th shopping madness at the mall. She does this not because she enjoys spending time with me, or feels uncomfortable shopping alone in crowded places. Rather she knows if I don't tag along, she'll have no one to drag her three foot fiber-optic toy soldier yard ornament from store to store.

There were a few sweet moments of respite while she battled the other shoppers - who by now had forgotten all about peace and love and just wanted to return those godawful tube socks Aunt Ethel gave them to the Belk- when I was able to steal away and shop for things that I like; namely, movies and books. Lucky for me, FYE was offering some crazy good sales. I managed to pull in an impressive haul for very low prices, so I've decided to start with those movies. Some of them I've never seen before. Others, I've seen bits and pieces, or caught the tail end of them on TNT. At any rate, here are the movies I plan on reviewing January 1-8. I don't know what I'll be watching January 7th- my birthday!- so for now that's a free day.

January 1st: Groundhog Day & Grumpy Old Men
January 2nd: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar & Private Benjamin
January 3rd: Erin Brockovich & Scrooged
January 4th: Scared Stiff & Same Time Next Year
January 5th: The Misfits & Heart and Souls
January 6th: Lovesick & Shallow Hal
January 7th: ???
January 8th: Super Fuzz (aka Super Snooper) & House of Wax (the original with Vincent Price)

I'll keep you posted as to my plans for the seventh, but until then I am

Preparation for the Impossible

Okay, maybe it's not so impossible. It seems more unlikely.

Unlikely that I - a habitual procrastinator and at times, downright lazy person- will be able to commit to something like this and see it through. My completion of this task also seems unlikely because I have so, so, so, SO many DVDs in my collection. At last count, (well, attempted count) I found well over seven hundred titles.

Over SEVEN HUNDRED!

According to my MacBook's handy dandy calculator function, watching the estimated 750 movies in one year will involve 62.5 films each month.

I have a personal system of cataloging movies by genre. Sections are as follows:

-Action
-War
-Tarantino (yes, he has his own section. Don't judge me.)
-Horror
-Independent/Weird/Funky/Bizarre
-Kids
-Oldies
-Musicals/Plays on Film
-Television Shows
-Cartoons
-Comedy/Raunchy Comedy
-Holiday Themed
-A Random Catch-All Category for everything else

The project will not include special features, feature commentaries, or any material on bonus discs. Each film watched will have a thorough review posted on this blog, including MPAA ratings, and the names of screenwriters, directors, and major actors.

It is my hope that through this experiment, I will learn more about movies and the people who make them. I hope to hear from you, movie buffs, especially if your reviews of a particular film are similar to, or radically different from mine.

It's going to be an interesting experience, of that I'm sure. I'll try to post names of each week's movies early, in case you plan on watching and reviewing along with me. I look forward to hearing from you!
